(Thessalia, Northern Greece)
In an almost inaccessible region of sandstone peaks, monks settled on these ‘columns of the sky’ from the 11th century on-wards.
Twenty-four of these monasteries were built, despite incredible difficulties, at the time of the great revival of the hermetic ideal in the 15th century. Their 16th-century frescoes mark a key stage in the development of post-Byzantine painting.
Did you know?
The sandstone peaks were formed of deposits of stone, sand and mud from streams flowing into a delta at the edge of a lake 60 millions years ago. The rock pillars were then formed by weathering by water, wind and extremes of temperature on the vertical faults. It is extremely unusual that this formation is created in a mountainous area.
(Meteora is among the most famous climbing centers of the world and one of the oldest landscapes on earth,a monument of natural beauty.)
(Enjoy taking long excursions on the beautiful trekking routes among fir,oak and chestnut trees in the broader area of Meteora.)
Making your way through the rocks that form Meteora could only lead you to places you would remember for their spiritual energy and the majestic view.
